Nationals Notebook: 2 disastrous 9th innings keep progress in check

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 04:19:42 GMT

There’s a fine line between good and great in Major League Baseball. There’s also a fine line between contenders and pretenders, as well as chasing what might be a meaningless milestone but a definite marker for improvement. The Washington Nationals had opportunities to post a series win and a sweep this past week, but a ninth-inning meltdown on Thursday cost them in an 8-6 loss to San Diego. On Sunday, a late-inning fade resulted in a walk-off 3-2 win for Kansas City. When chasing the elusive winning month (Nats haven’t posted one since June 2021), every game makes a difference. Instead of being 13-13 needing to take two of three games from the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers for a non-sub-.500 May, they could have been in prime position to do so.“You just gotta keep going. Keep grinding it out. I mean, we trust each other, we trust everybody’s ability to do their job,” outfielder Alex Call said after Thursday’s loss to the Padres. “...

Dry Pattern Rolls On

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 04:19:42 GMT

What a beautiful weekend we had across New England. In fact, I’m not sure I saw a cloud over the four day span from Friday thru today. While today brought back the sunshine, it was sharply cooler than the other summer-like days we had. Temperatures were 25 degrees colder this afternoon than yesterday afternoon in communities along the coastline. The cool air will stay in place overnight with many towns falling to the low 40s — some of our typically cooler spots could even dip to the upper 30s.Tomorrow is going to be another “cooler coast” day as we keep the onshore breeze Tuesday. You’ll also notice the nice bright blue skies from the weekend will be gone as we watch another round of smoky skies take over. Temperatures tomorrow will be warmer the farther away from the ocean you go.While we’ve been talking about Canadian wildfire smoke for a few weeks, tomorrow’s will be different. The difference will be the smoke coming from an entirely diff...

Republicans blast debt ceiling deal between McCarthy and Biden: ‘Bad news’

Just a day after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy released the text of his compromised deal to prevent a national default, Republicans in and out of Congress were already at odds over the agreement struck between House negotiators and President Biden. The “agreement in principle” to do away with the debt limit until at least 2025 in exchange for nominal cuts to the IRS and a slight alteration of who might qualify for food subsidies championed by McCarthy is apparently not what some Republicans were envisioning when they sent their tenuously appointed speaker to make a deal with Biden.“This #debtceiling ‘deal’ is uncapped – set to expire subject to (Treasury Secretary Janet) Yellen’s discretion… wait for it… in a lame duck (1/1/2025) guaranteed to still have a Dem Senate & Biden White House,” Texas Rep. Chip Roy said via Twitter. This #debtceiling “deal” is uncapped – set to expire subject to Yellen's discretion… wait for it… in a lame duck (1/1/2025) ...

Jaczek appeared today before a House committee on government operations and was pressed by Opposition MPs on when her government intends to make a decision about the official residence of the prime minister. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his family have not taken up residence in the mansion, which was closed to staff last fall due to its worsening condition, including a rodent infestation. The National Capital Commission, controller of the property, says contractors recently began removing aged electrical systems and asbestos, which is necessary regardless of any decision on the building’s future. A spokeswoman says the current work is expected to take one year and cost $4.3 million.
