When Fiji went back to basics in training camp in July, it wasn’t joking. The team left behind the resorts and umbrella drinks in Suva to travel by ferries and buses for more than a day to the tiny village of Welagi on the outer island of Taveuni. Accommodation was thin mattresses on the floor of a hall. Food was provided by villagers, with whom the team ate. The practice field beside a beach was sandy. The point was not just to train and bond for the Rugby World Cup but to reconnect with the people, remember what it meant to be Fijian. Many of the players — many of them well-paid stars in Europe — hadn’t trained in a village. But it reminded them of village life and games as kids. The humbling experience was a massive hit. The training, though, was brutal.Simon Raiwalui, the coach since only February, was determined Fiji would not fade in the last 20 minutes of any games. So the players’ fitness was upgraded. There were giant sand dunes to trudge up in bare feet. In...Abren banco de llamadas para responder tus preguntas sobre cómo registrarte para votar

WARSAW — Exactly a month before a pivotal general election, Poland’s ruling nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party is scrambling to contain a snowballing scandal, in which officials have been fired and others arrested and charged over an alleged bribery scheme to hand out Polish visas.Poland’s government prides itself on its tough-on-migration credentials but the allegation at the heart of the scandal is that its operatives in consulates worldwide — particularly in Africa and Asia — doled out Polish visas, and EU access, for generous sweeteners. Polish media said some 250,000 visas had been granted since 2021, for thousands and even tens of thousands of euros each. According to some reports, migrants used Polish multiple-entry visas to travel to Mexico and then enter the United States. Opposition leader Donald Tusk scented blood and slammed the unfolding events as “the biggest scandal of the 21st century in Poland.” The Polish foreign ministry on Friday canc...EU lifts Ukrainian grain import ban; Poland vows to go it alone

The European Commission said it would not extend a ban on Ukrainian grain imports that expires on Friday night, deciding at the last minute to let it lapse despite intense lobbying from eastern EU countries. In a first reaction, the Polish government threatened to impose its own unilateral ban — which would violate EU single market rules and break solidarity with Kyiv, which Warsaw has supported in its war of defense against Russia.Imports of Ukrainian grain, including wheat and maize, were blocked from the territory of five eastern EU countries – Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria — under an agreement reached with Brussels earlier this year. Only transit to other destinations was allowed. The measures were put in place to protect farmers in the five countries from an influx of cheap produce from their war-torn neighbor.“We currently do not see market distortions in those five member states, therefore we are not extending the ban,” EU Trade Commissioner Va...Latest news
