BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — NATO member Romania found new fragments of a drone deemed similar to those used by the Russian army near its border with war-torn Ukraine on Wednesday, in the third such finding in a week, defense officials said. Two helicopters from the Romanian Air Force were deployed with specialist teams to Nufaru and Victoria in the eastern county of Tulcea where the fragments were spread over an area of “several tens of meters,” the Ministry of National Defense said in a statement. It said in a separate statement that it has notified the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations about areas near the border that could be at risk of incidents as Russian forces attack Ukraine’s Danube River ports across the river from Romania. Emergency authorities have received phone calls “about possible cases of drone impacts” between three localities, including Nufaru, the ministry said. It later confirmed that samples collected from the site are similar to those used b...Responders dig for bodies in Moroccan mountain villages devastated by last week’s earthquake

IMI N’TALA, Morocco (AP) — The stench of death wafted through the village of Imi N’Tala high up in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains, where last week’s catastrophic earthquake razed the hamlet’s mud-brick buildings and killed dozens of residents. On Tuesday, bulldozers, rescues crews and Moroccan first responders dug through the wreckage around the clock in the hopes of finding the eight to 10 corpses still underneath.“The mountain was split in half and started falling. Houses were fully destroyed,” a local man, Ait Ougadir Al Houcine, said as crews worked to recover bodies, including his sister’s. “Some people lost all their cattle. We have nothing but the clothes we’re wearing. Everything is gone.”The scene in Imi N’Tala, which is mainly home to herders and farmers and lost 96 people to Friday’s earthquake, mirrored the situation in dozens of communities along the treacherous mountain roads south of Marrakech. DENVER (KDVR) -- Saint Joseph Hospital originated with four sisters from Kansas and $9 to start a hospital. From a small cottage in 1873, St. Joseph is now coming up on its 150th anniversary. On Sept. 22, 1873, the four sisters from the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth raised funding to open a cottage at the intersection of 14th Avenue and Arapahoe Street, which started the organization that became Saint Joseph Hospital. Denver’s pumpkin spice hysteria is just getting started After many relocations and donations from Colorado governors, the Sisters landed on theirsite on 18th Avenue in 1876. The building was a ginormous upgrade from the original cottage. It was a $40,000, three-story brick building with 30 hospital beds. It was coined St. Joseph’s. Within the first year, patients almost doubled from 88 to 168. Saint Joseph's nurses from 1906. A teenager who appeared in court Wednesday has been ordered to be held in secured detention for a period of 21 days and will undergo a psychiatric evaluation after he attacked a teacher at his school with a pair of scissors. The 14-year-old male, whose identity is being withheld due to legal regulations, appeared before the court following the incident that occurred on Tuesday. The assault started at the Bright Horizons School, a specialized school servicing students with disabilities after the ninth-grade student cut a teacher, leaving her with a laceration on her ear. The teacher has since been released from the hospital. “If the teacher did not run to try to get away, there’s conversation that the child could have easily stabbed her in her face,” said Anna Fusco, president of the Broward Teachers Union. She described a disturbing picture in an interview with 7News following the incident. “There was blood in the hall, it was a very traumatizing, violent attack,” F...Florida man already charged in killing has also been indicted in a Lyft driver’s slaying

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A Florida man already charged with murder has been indicted for the killing of a Lyft driver whose car he allegedly stole in an attempt to escape, authorities announced Wednesday. An Okeechobee County grand jury this week indicted Mathew Flores with first-degree murder and armed robbery for the Jan. 30 slaying of 74-year-old Gary Levin. Police had been seeking Flores, 36, for a killing in a central Florida farming community a week earlier when he had a friend use the Lyft phone app to summon Levin in Palm Beach County.Flores shot Levin inside his 2022 Kia Stinger and then dumped his body near Lake Okeechobee, said Eli Lawson, a special agent in charge with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Flores was arrested in North Carolina three days later after police say he led them on a high-speed chase in Levin’s car.Flores was extradited last week to Florida for the Jan. 24 slaying in Hardee County of Jose Carlos Martinez, 43, who was shot multiple t...Tobias Ellwood quits as UK defense committee chair after Taliban video backlash

LONDON — Tobias Ellwood on Wednesday quit as chairman of the House of Commons defense select committee after sparking a backlash from fellow members by urging British engagement with Afghanistan’s Taliban. A person close to the committee confirmed multiple reports that Ellwood — who was facing a motion of no-confidence from members — had resigned the post, which plays a key role in scrutinizing British defense policy. It comes after Ellwood, a former defense minister, sparked anger by publishing a video from a trip to Afghanistan in which he urged engagement with the group, which regained control of Afghanistan in 2021 after years of U.S. and U.K. involvement there. In the video, Ellwood argued: “Security has vastly improved, corruption is down and the opium trade has all but disappeared.”The footage, which was shared by the Taliban on social media, was heavily criticized by fellow MPs at the time. Former Conservative leader Iain Duncan Smith asked during a July House of ...Authorities in Lynn issue shelter-in-place order for section of city as officers search for shooting suspect

By Gretchen McKay | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (TNS)Is there anything better than a well-built salad? And by salad, I mean a towering wedge of crunchy iceberg lettuce topped with a tangy yet creamy homemade blue cheese dressing and juicy chunks of ripe, diced tomato and crunchy bacon bits.A staple on steakhouse and some gastropub menus, the salad is thought to date back at least to the early 1900s, a few years after the first cultivar for iceberg lettuce was developed in California. Some say they called it “iceberg” because that’s what it looked like when it was transported on crushed ice; others attribute its name to its ice-white color of its inner leaves and crunchy texture. One early version of what cookbook author Marion Harris Neil dubbed “Lettuce Salad with Roquefort Dressing” appeared in “Salads, Sandwiches and Chafing Dish Recipes” in 1916 and by the mid 1920s, with bottled salad dressing being mass-produced by companies such as Kraft, the cri...North Korea’s Kim vows full support for Moscow at a summit with Putin in Russia’s Far East

By KIM TONG-HYUNG and DASHA LITVINOVA (Associated Press)SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea’s Kim Jong Un vowed “full and unconditional support” for Russia’s Vladimir Putin on Wednesday as the two leaders isolated by the West held a summit that the U.S. warned could lead to a deal to supply ammunition for Moscow’s war in Ukraine. The meeting, which lasted over four hours at Russia’s spaceport in the Far East, underscores how the two countries’ interests are aligning: Putin is believed to be seeking one of the few things impoverished North Korea has in abundance -– stockpiles of aging ammunition and rockets for Soviet-era weapons.Such a request would mark a role reversal from the 1950-53 Korean War, when Moscow gave weapons to support Pyongyang’s invasion of South Korea, and in the decades of Soviet sponsorship of the North that followed. The decision to meet at the Vostochny Cosmodrome, Russia’s most important launch ...Latest news
